Gone for the Day: Family Fun in Central Texas
Published in Paperback by Texas A&M University Press (November, 1995)
Author: Deborah Douglas
Average review score:

This is a well written, witty and insightful book.
Gone for the Day, as it is titled, would lead one to believe that it is simply a book about day trips. Naturally, I made the same assumption, purchased the book, and found a wonderfully written, humerous, folk tale of central Texas. This is a book that should be bought for the read, and not the road.

Humorous and readable descriptions of 18 destinations
Take this enjoyable book along while exploring some of Texas' most outstanding yet least known family fun spots. Full of humorous history and highlights about small towns, state parks, trail rides, boat excursions and swimming holes. Includes Enchanted Rock, Bandera, Lost Maples, Westcave Preserve, Fredericksburg and much more!

Good Mornings: Great Breakfasts and Brunches for Starting the Day Right
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (August, 1996)
Authors: Michael McLaughlin and Dan Clark
Average review score:

A tremendous resource for anyone with overnight houseguests.
I purchased this book about a year and a half ago when it became clear that my holiday brunches were getting just a little TOO predictable. Family and friends knew what they'd be getting each time, and it was becoming just a little boring. Then Michael McLaughlin came to the rescue with GOOD MORNINGS.

He covers a variety of meal styles, from rib-sticking breakfast feasts to more elegant brunches, to some light & quick choices like Blueberry-Watermelon Smoothies. There are some recipes that appeal to adults (like the Warm Salad of Scrambled Eggs, Smoked Fish, and Greens, which was excellent and relatively simple to make for 4); others that are geared to younger tastes (such as PB & J--Peanut Butter & Jelly--French Toast Sandwiches--great when made with grape jelly!); and dishes with universal appeal like Creamed Hash Browns.

I now find myself using the book more and more when I have weekend houseguests. Since people's individual tastes can vary so widely early in the morning, there is definitely something for everyone in this collection. Even with a diverse group that included a dedicated dieter, another who wanted "just coffee", and others who were willing to indulge a bit, I've been able to pull together a good meal in very little time. (Many of the recipes have make-ahead steps.) In addition to the emphasis on relaxed entertaining, there are many good suggestions, particularly among the breads, rolls, and muffins (Carrot-Currant Bran Muffins are a particular favorite of mine), that will fill the bill nicely on a weekday morning when people are headed out to work or school. Now that the holidays are here, and I'm expecting visitors, I'm pulling this book out again so that I can feed them well, and still have some time for myself.

Good Mornings - innovative breakfast and brunch ideas
I gave this book to my husband for some occasion or another and used it myself to entertain friends from San Francisco. We had the Double Salmon Cakes, which must be started the night before, with Spicy Peach Ketchup(yum!) and Double Hominy Grits (obviously we're from the South) with Cheese and Green Onions. Also on the menu, Peppered Buttermilk Biscuits. We served the brunch on the deck (it was Memorial Day): everyone declared it a delicious meal and our friends have asked for the recipes. So I'm sending them a copy of the book as a "thank you" for my recent visit with them in SFO. The photography is beautiful and the page layouts easy to read.

Good People, Tough Choices: Making the Right Decisions Every Day
Published in Paperback by Thomas More Publishing (January, 1999)
Author: Timothy E. O'Connell
Average review score:

Real Insights for real people
O'Connell moves so well between scholarly ideas and the world of ordinary people. The language is friendly, the tone is welcoming. And the issues, from sex to money, are the kinds of things we're all concerned about. I found the "Points to Ponder" in each chapter to be very powerful.

Wise insights for ordinary folks
My church group read this book together. What a great experience! We all enjoyed the book. And the reflection questions at the end of the chapters stimulated lots of good discussion. O'Connell really knows how to put important things into ordinary language.

The Good-Bye Game (All-By-Myself Books)
Published in Hardcover by Infinity Plus One Llc (October, 1998)
Authors: Diane Cocca-Spofford, Diane Spofford, and Maryann Cocca-Leffler
Average review score:

The Good-bye Game
My 2 year old son loves this book! I kiss him and hug him as I read it according to the story. I misplaced the original book, but am ordering another here on Amazon.

Young children will enjoy it, as it is not too long or too short and has nice, bright illustrations. I don't even mind reading it a "gazillion" times, as you have to have to do with little ones.

The Goodbye Game,
If your child has a difficult time separating from you, then this is the book for you! The Goodbye Game helps children say Goodbye in a positive way. The repetition of playing the goodbye game not only a useful tool to combat separation anxiety but also a math activity. My children have used the goodbye game at day care, pre-school, with babysitters and at bedtime. Fortunately, they don't "need' to play the game anymore, but they still enjoy the story.

Grand Days
Published in Paperback by Books Britain (December, 1994)
Author: Frank Moorhouse
Average review score:

One of the greats
Moorhouse, better known as a writer of experimental fiction in Australia, takes a stab at historical fiction with brilliant results. The basic story--the education of a young Australian woman at the League of Nations in Geneva in the 1920s--barely hints at all the strange, insightful, and moving places the novel goes. This is a story about idealism and corruption--both personal and on the world stage--that it unlike anything else you've read. It's long and it's very very smart--still the fact that it's not better known and aclaimed is very puzzling.

How Can a Book This Important Be So Much Fun?
This novel is about Edith Campbell Berry, a bright young lady who joins the League of Nations and sets about to reform the world. She has a strong, but undisciplined intellect, able to view her mundane tasks, such as seeing that delegates get a pencil holder at a conference, as matters of world shaking importance. She is even able to intellectualize the act of defecation. Thinking herself a modern woman, she engages in lots of kinky sex. In all of this, the author manages to recreate the intellectual passions of the age. Indeed, Edith's superiors do not seem to be any more effective than she is. And then, somewhere along the way, Edith is no longer the innocent Candide, but becomes something much more sinister, destroying a lover without giving him a chance to explain himself and developing a passion for eugenics to reduce the numbers of the "lower classes" (interestingly, she shows no concern with the huge election gains of the Nazi Party in Germany at this time). Yet there is no abrupt transition: Edith, like many 20th Century intellectuals, has developed along logical lines unhampered by morality, a route which leads to tyranny. If you want keen insight into how civilized countries developed death camps and gulags and how leading intellectuals supported them every step of the way, read this book. That the author avoids having his message overwhelm the generally comic tone is a tribute to his skill. This book is a classic. It even has appendices in the back to provide the reader with information ranging from the constitution of the League of Nations to a summary of many of the intellectual developments of the 1920s.

The great and abominable church of the Devil
Published in Unknown Binding by SunRise Pub. ()
Author: H. Verlan Andersen
Average review score:

A VERY CONVINCING BOOK--Very well reasoned out.
I have read a number of books attempting to explain what certain prophecies are about. Many are over-speculative, a few are good. This one is probably one of the most convincing one out there.

This 20 Chapter book goes step-by-step through the scriptures and words of prophets to show what this evil organization really is. Here are a few of the chapter titles:

-A Satanic World wide Organization foretold
-The universal Problem of deception
-The Lord's Involvement in Political Affairs

-The Lord Judges Men by the Political Laws they Sanction or Oppose
-The Lord's Plan for Free Agency
-Free Agency in Hereafter Determined by Attitude Toward it Here-Satan's Plan to Destroy Free Agency
-Religious History Affirms that Satan has Always Tried to Control
Government
-Identification of Satan's Church by Latter-Day Prophets
-Priestcraft
-Socialized Education and False Doctrines
-The Kingdom of God vs. the Kingdom of the Devil
-The destruction of the Devil's Church

There are also two relevant Appendicies:
-The Constitution of the United States
-Excerpts from The Communist Manifesto

You won't regret buying this book.

--George Stancliffe

The Great and Abominable Church of the Devil
In the Scriptures it mentions the Great and Abominable Church of the Devil as being diametrically opposed to the work of the Lord. Satan's goal is to destroy the free agency of man and to "make man miserable like unto himself". Many biblical scholars have attempted to depict ecclesiastical churches as part of the Great and Abominable. However, H. Verlan Andersen proves, in a very convincing way, that the Great and Abominable Church of the Devil is corrupt government. Only corrupted government can unjustly imprison people and confiscate their property. Only corrupt government, such as Hitler's Third Reich, can declare war on other nations and cause endless misery and suffering. Ecclesiastical churches ask you to participate voluntarily and voluntarily worship God and try to do good to your fellow man. Satan's way is force and coercion. Through reading this book you will get a very great appreciation for the freedoms we have guaranteed by the Constitution and you will commit yourself to seeing that our government stands on firm and right principles.

Great Days: 50 Ways to Add Energy, Enthusiasm, & Enjoyment to Your Life
Published in Paperback by Great Days Press (01 August, 1997)
Author: Julie Alexander
Average review score:

So down to earth and uplifting!!!! Makes for great reading.
I love books that speak to a part of all of us. I think this book does just that. Julie Alexander has put on paper so many things we all deal with daily with friends, children, family, jobs and speaks to it in a humorous way as well as a touching way. I enjoyed the book so much and hope to see more from her!!

A "must read" book for daily doses of inspiration and humor!
GREAT DAYS gives inspriation and humor through personal stories and wisdom from its author and from quotes of well-known and ordinary people. Each reading begins with a quote, followed by a story or bit of wisdom to elaborate the point....nothing scholarly or deep--just good pracitcal "boosts" for the mind and the soul. The author draws upon her years of experience as a public school teacher, public speaker, wife, mother, daughter, and friend to make this book very readable and appealing. GREAT DAYS is a part of our high school's collection in the library, and it ranks as a favorite among our students and faculty.
